He was born March 11th in the early afternoon after a near 13 hour labor from induction. I'm so proud of his mama and papa. When the time came for her to do what was needed, she was a trooper and pulled through. He was by her side supporting her all the way.
After a great slow labor that allowed her to get the pain medicine and epidural when she needed them, there were a few tense moments at the end where we thought we were going to lose little Matthias. As often happens, the umbilical cord got wrapped around his neck. Add to it that he was an 8.1 oz baby trying to get out of a little mama. But between the doctor's expertise and Mama's need to see her baby, they got him out quickly.
Time paused as everyone in the room held their breath. He hadn't cried. Family stepped back as the doctor and nurses worked quickly to clear his nose and mouth, rubbed his chest and belly, tickled his feet. Still nothing. Papa was busy telling Mama how proud he was of her while the team members quietly begged Baby Boy to take that first breath. Wide-eyed family members passed silent prayers to each other as tears began to flow.
Nearly a minute passed by before he gurgled. All eyes turned on Baby Boy. Whether it was said out loud or not, I don't really know but the room was filled with "Come on, cry!"
And then he finally did.
It wasn't a big and loud cry but it was Life and the room erupted in cheers and clapping.
Mama and Papa's faces lit up with joy at first site of their little miracle. They cried together as they cradled him lovingly. The rest of the family cried for them and what almost wasn't.
